BlackJack Surrender

General

Blackjack Surrender is an exciting realization of the well-known casino game, Blackjack.

In Blackjack Surrender, a player competes against the Dealer. The goal of the game is for the player to beat the Dealer's hand, either by getting a better hand without exceeding 21 or by the Dealer's hand going bust (going over 21).

The game is played with 4 decks, each consisting of 52 cards. Cards are shuffled after every round.

Both the player and the Dealer are dealt two cards, and from there, the player may request as many cards as they want, as long as the hand doesn't exceed the value of 21. After the player finishes with their hand, the same process occurs to the Dealer's hand, after which the two hands are compared and bets paid or collected. The only difference from classical Blackjack game is the Surrender option, allowing a player to surrender after the first two cards are dealt.

A Blackjack is a total of 21, when a hand contains an Ace and any ten-valued card (Jack, King, Queen or Ten), but only when these two cards are the first cards dealt to a player or Dealer.

Card Values

Blackjack hands are scored by their point total. In Blackjack, cards are valued in the following way:

  • An Ace can be counted as either 1 or 11 (as explained below).
  • Cards from 2 through 9 have their face values.
  • 10, Jack, Queen, and King are all valued at 10.

The value of a hand is simply the sum of the points for each card in the hand. For example, a hand containing (5, 7, 9) has the value of 21.

An Ace can be counted either as 1 or 11. An Ace always has the value that makes the best hand. Suppose you have (Ace, 7). The value of this hand can be either 8 or 18. If you stop drawing cards here, it will be 18.

  • Soft total: a hand containing an ace that can be counted as 11 without the total going above 21. For example, (Ace-6) is soft 17.
  • Hard total: a hand containing an ace that can only be counted as one because counting it as 11 would make the hand go over 21. For example, (Ace-6-10) is hard 17.

Let's assume you draw one more card. The hand now contains (Ace, 7, 8). Its total value is 16.

Placing Bets

You may bet on up to three hands, placing bets on the central, right and left boxes accordingly. To place a bet, use the betting chips found at the bottom right of the table. To select a chip, click on the desired one with the left mouse button. You may need several chips to reach the desired bet amount; in this case a stack of chips can be formed on the betting area. To place a chip, use any of the following methods:

  • Click on the betting square where you wish to place the selected chip.
  • Drag and drop the chosen chip on the desired betting square.
  • Click on the Repeat button to place a bet equal to your previous one. Note: for your first bet, the Repeat control is disabled.

  - Place your bet here.

The total bet value is displayed in a small square beside the chips placed. The betting limits are displayed in the frame to the top left of the game table.
To view the betting limits, refer to Casino Betting Limits.

To remove a bet completely or decrease its value, you should remove the chip or chips placed. You may do this in any of the following ways:

  • Click and drag chips from the table to the betting chips area.
  • Select the 'X' chip and then click on the chip/stack of chips placed. The chips will be removed one by one.
  • Hold down CTRL and left click the chip/stack of chips placed. The chips will be removed one by one.
  • Click on Clear to remove all chips currently placed on the table.

Dealing

Click on the Deal button to start dealing cards. Once the button is pressed, both you and the Dealer are dealt two cards. You receive your cards face up; the Dealer receives one card face down, the other face up.

If you play multiple hands, several hands will be dealt to you. For each hand, two cards are dealt face up. In this case each hand will be treated separately.

If you are dealt Blackjack, you are immediately paid 1.5 times the placed bet, unless the Dealer also has Blackjack, in which case it is a Push.

The Dealer starts playing his hand once all the player's hands are completed. The Dealer stands on 17.

Check for Blackjack

If the Dealer's face-up card is 10, K, Q, J or Ace the Dealer checks for Blackjack:

  • If the Dealer has Blackjack, his face-down card opens. No more cards are dealt to you. The game is over.
  • If the Dealer doesn't have Blackjack, then your hand is treated and the game proceeds as usual, with the Double, Hit, Stand and Surrender options offered (see Game Options).

If the Dealer's face-up card is an Ace, Insurance is offered before the check is performed (for details on Insurance, refer to Casino Options).

Game Options

To proceed with the game:

  • Click on Surrender if you are not satisfied with the first two cards dealt to you and do not want to continue the game. You can surrender only after the Dealer checks for Blackjack. If the Dealer has Blackjack, the game stops. Upon Surrender you receive half of your initial bet back and the game round is over.
  • Click on the Hit button to draw an additional card to a hand. You may draw as many cards as required. If the total reaches 21, you cannot hit again. If your hand busts (its total exceeds 21), this hand loses and is removed from the table.
  • Click on Stand to stop drawing cards to that hand. If you click on Stand button your hand will remain at its current value. You may stand at any time if you are satisfied with your hand as it is. When the dealer completes his hand, the hand will be compared.
  • Click on the Double button to use the 'double' option. You may only use this option on being dealt the first two cards. Once Double is clicked, your original bet amount is doubled and you are dealt one more card. No more cards can be drawn for this hand.

Depending on which cards are dealt, the Split and Insurance options may become available.

Split - If your first two cards are of the same value (two Aces, two Sevens, etc) you may use the 'Split' option. Jack, King and Queen all have a value of 10, therefore two different face cards are considered acceptable for splitting. This also applies if you have, for example, a King and a Ten.

If splitting a pair of Aces, you are only allowed to draw one card on each Ace. If you then draw a ten-valued card on one of the split Aces, this hand is not considered a Blackjack but treated as a normal 21.

Once the Split control is clicked, your hand is split into two separate hands. One card is dealt from the shoe to each of two hands, and one more bet is placed on the betting area, equal to the original bet. Each hand formed is treated as usual. You may only split a hand once.

Insurance - This option becomes available if the Dealer's face-up card is an Ace. In this case, a player has the option to insure against the dealer having Blackjack. An 'Insurance' message and 'Yes' and 'No' controls appear on the game table.

To make an Insurance bet click on Yes. An additional bet will be placed, equal to half your initial bet. The bet is placed to the lower left from the main bet.

  • If the Dealer does have a Blackjack, the Dealer's face-down card opens and the game stops. You lose your original bet, but your insurance returns 2 to 1.
  • If the Dealer does not have Blackjack, the Stand, Hit, Double and Surrender buttons become available and the game proceeds.

To start playing a new game round, click on the New Game button. To repeat the bets placed in the previous round, use the Repeat control.

Game Results/Payouts

After a player stands with a hand (stops drawing cards) and the Dealer completes his hand, the player's and the Dealer's hands are compared. The winning hand is the one with the higher total. A hand with Blackjack beats any other hand, including a regular 21. If the hand total is greater than 21, the hand busts.

A Blackjack game can have three possible results:

Win - A player wins if his hand total is greater than the Dealer's hand total, without busting (going over 21). A WIN indicator appears near the hand.

Lose - The player loses if his hand total is less than the Dealer's, or if the hand busts. A BUST indicator appears next to the corresponding hand.

Push - A push is when both the player's hand and the dealer's hand are of equal value. A PUSH indicator appears next to the player's hand.

  • A regular win pays out 1 to 1; this means that a $10 bet pays out $10 and you get your initial bet back.
  • Blackjack pays out 3 to 2; this means that a $10 bet pays out $15 and you get your initial bet back.
  • If you Surrender, half the initial bet is paid to you and the game ends.
  • Insurance usually pays out 2 to 1. If a player's initial bet is $10, and they decide to place the insurance bet (equal to half the initial bet), the player gets 2:1 on the $5 Insurance wager and receives $10 should the Dealer have Blackjack.
  • In the event of a push, all stakes are returned to the player.
